THE TILLEY FAMILY IN AUSTRALIA

After losing his wife and two children through sickness, Henry left England to come to Australia with his remaining child a son John.They arrived in Adelaide on the ship "Asceola"** in April 1851,In 1853 Henry and son went to the Victorian gold fields with some success,as on their return they were able to buy 77 acres of land on Upper Dry Creek,Section 2131 on the South West corner of Yatala Vale Road and Golden Grove Road for 800 pounds,They built a house on the farm property and named it Hillcott Farm after their village of Hilcott in England. In the 1863/64 Council assessment notices Henry is listed as working section 2131 (Hillcott) and further North along the Golden Grove Road, sections 2157 ,2160 (Garden Grove area), with Council value of 90 pounds total, and Council Rates at two pounds five shillings on 211 acres. These figures were the same for the 1868/1869 assessment however by the year 1875 Henry had added section 2146, acerage had increased to 368 and Council value of 160 pounds with rates of four pounds five shillings.This also included section 2130 which took Hillcott from both sides of Golden Grove Road through to Hancock Road. Hillcott farm land was sub-divided in app 1992, while Hillcott farmhouse itself was reported being demolished in May 1998.

" OSCEOLA" a ship of 709 ton registry under Capt Robinson Waite with 253(284) passengers on board took her departure from Plymouth on the 25/12/1850, arriving at Port Adelaide, SA on 6/4/1851 Two of the listed passengers were,

Henry Tilly,agriculture laborer, aged 39 years.

John Tilly,(son) aged 10 years, from Hilcott in Wiltshire,Eng.

After leaving Port Adelaide on her return voyage she was lost at sea.No trace of ship or crew were ever found. (Not confirmed).

** Records at SA Genealogy cross reference Asceola/Osceola. Early spelling (in England) was Hilcot,later it became Hilcott and Henry's farm was Hillcott.
